🇬🇧 Before posting my holiday photos, I first 🇬🇧 Before posting my holiday photos, I first need to celebrate my 12.5 year anniversary in science🤓 (yes, I know it's a strange Dutch custom to celebrate 12.5 years 😅) • Even though I began my bachelors in Biology in 2008, I only started an elaborate research project in January 2012, which got published a few years later during my PhD. • In these last 12.5 years my life has mostly revolved around science, although me and science only officially tied the knot on the 28th of February 2022 🎓💍(iykyk😉 4th and 5th photo). There were amazing ups, but also downs. Last year, I seriously considered quitting academic science, after seeing the worst of it in the US. But moving back to Europe has given me a renewed perspective (and has been the best life decision) and I'm slowly loving science again (and slowly finding some mental resilience back). • A few weeks ago I gave a talk to a room full of random people who were interested in science and especially came to hear about *my* science. That was a new eye-opener: people find science interesting and they want to hear about the new things we are discovering! And I'm the scientist who gets to tell them. Seeing myself and my science through other people's eyes gave me a new appreciation for it and I think it's really cool! • I'll be giving a few more talks at public events, and the next is at the Frankfurt Science Festival on the 28th of September. For all the love birds today 🦉❤️🦉 • I For all the love birds today 🦉❤️🦉 • I guess the cute aggression is true for more species, biting those fluffy cheeks 😄 • • 🇬🇧 This pair of barred owls is mutual preening (allopreening) which is an important behavior in many owl species. Especially the face, head, and neck get preened. Even though allopreening is also observed with owlets, most allopreening is done between paired birds, and plays a big role in pair-forming and pair-bonding. • 🇳🇱 Dit paartje gestreepte bosuilen is elkaars veren aan het gladstrijken, een belangrijk gedrag in veel uilensoorten. Vooral het gezicht, het hoofd en de nek worden verzorgd. Anyone else in need of spring? ☀️ I need more Anyone else in need of spring? ☀️ I need more sunshine for sure.. and baby birds.. 🐣 • • 🇬🇧 Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) Great crested grebes live mainly on and in the water. They have an elaborate mating ritual with courtship dancing and synchronized diving. When the chicks are born they can already swim after a few days, but the parents take the chicks on their backs for the first weeks (even when they're diving for food!) • 🇳🇱 Fuut Futen leven voornamelijk op en in het water. Ze hebben een uitgebreid baltsgedrag met dansen en synchroon duiken. Many birds actually relieve themselves before flight, so there's a high chance that when you see a bird doing a 💩, it will take off soon after. • • 🇬🇧 Great egret (Ardea alba) Look at that beautiful reflection of the water on its wings 😍 I took these video and photo in the US, but the great egret is also becoming an often seen bird in The Netherlands. Around twenty years ago, the great egret was rare, but in many open fields and around small lakes you can now find them. The great egret is around the size of the European grey heron, but entirely white, with a yellow bill and a yellow patch between the eye and the bill (the lore). Egret fact: during breeding season, the lore turns bright green and long ornamental feathers grow on their back, called "aigrettes" (the origin of the name egret). • 🇳🇱 Grote zilverreiger Zie je hoe mooi het water reflecteert op de onderkant van de vleugels?😍 Ik heb deze foto's in de VS gemaakt, naar de zilverreiger is tegenwoordig ook in Nederland een vaak geziene vogel. In tegenstelling tot zo'n twintig jaar geleden toen het nog een zeldzaamheid was in Nederland. Deze reiger is ongeveer even groot als de blauwe reiger, maar helemaal wit, met een gele snavel en een geel gedeelte tussen het oog en de snavel. It's a wrap! 🎬 • • 🇬🇧 My thirties wer It's a wrap! 🎬 • • 🇬🇧 My thirties were wonderful! I finally gathered the courage to explore the world, mostly by myself. I visited over 20 countries and lived in 4 of them. I became a doctor. And I spent time with people I love, small moments that are sometimes more important than the big ones. If I had told my 28-year old self that the next eleven years would turn out like that, I would have never believed it😊 • Of course there were stressful and hard moments, but also many happy and peaceful moments which I hold close to my heart. I have experienced, learned, and changed (because the only constant is change) but at the same time I have also remained myself. I'm still a work in progress, but staying more true and soft to myself, I am finding again more inner peace this year. • For the next ten years, I hope I will change even more into myself, add some more laugh wrinkles, get to travel the world, see new places, photograph amazing landscapes and animals, and meet beautiful people ❤️ • Let's start the new chapter!🥂 • • 🇳🇱 Mijn jaren in de dertig waren top! Ik had eindelijk ik de moed verzameld om de wereld te verkennen, grotendeels alleen. Ik bezocht meer dan 20 landen en heb in 4 daarvan gewoond. Ik ben gepromoveerd. En ik heb tijd doorgebracht met mensen van wie ik hou, de kleine momenten zijn soms belangrijker dan de grote. Als ik tegen mijn 28-jarige zelf had gezegd dat de komende elf jaar zo zouden verlopen, had ik het nooit geloofd😊 • Natuurlijk waren er stressvolle en moeilijke momenten, maar ook veel gelukkige momenten die ik dichtbij mijn hart hou. Ik heb ervaringen opgedaan, geleerd, en ben veranderd (want de enige constante is verandering) maar tegelijkertijd ben ik ook mezelf gebleven. Ik ben nog steeds een "work in progress", maar door dichter bij mezelf te blijven en meer geduld met mezelf te hebben, vond ik dit jaar langzamerhand weer meer innerlijke rust. • De komende tien jaar hoop ik dat ik nog meer in mezelf zal veranderen, nog meer lachrimpels zal toevoegen, de wereld zal bereizen, nieuwe plaatsen zal zien, prachtige landschappen en dieren zal fotograferen, en mooie mensen zal ontmoeten ❤️ • Het nieuwe hoofdstuk begint vandaag!🥂
