I know I'm one day late for International Women's I know I'm one day late for International Women's Day, but I think there's never not a good day to celebrate the important women in your life!❤ ~ The women in my life are strong, independent, vulnerable, loving, powerful, caring, open, honest, successful, and always themselves, and I love each and every one of them. And I wouldn't be the person I am without all of them in my life. ~ There are of course many many more incredible women in my life than only the ones in these three photos😊 ~ Science fact: even the cell lines used in the lab for my research are female in origin (Hek293 and HeLa cells). These cells are crucial for scientists to understand how our cells function, and to study and find cures for diseases. Not your regular Monday😉 ~ This week truly flew Not your regular Monday😉 ~ This week truly flew.. I think everything that happened on Monday is finally sinking in. I did it.. It feels nice, but also a bit empty and strange; the PhD and my time in the lab in Groningen is done. Now it's time for the preparations to begin to move to the US, as I will start there end of April. ~ On Monday I got so many nice gifts and the things I actually liked the most are all the nice words everyone said during and after the defense, and written on beautiful cards💌 The photo album I got (which was also really nice!) had few empty pages in the back and I put the cards there so I can read them again later. ~ My amazing paranymphs made it all happen and I was, and am, so grateful for these two by my side. I did a thing yesterday 😉 ~ Finally did the day I did a thing yesterday 😉 ~ Finally did the day of my PhD defense arrive! It's dr. Els Kuiper from now on 🤓 and I got to make the mirror photo with me in the middle, supported by my paranymphs. ~ The day went really fast but I enjoyed it a lot! My books came today! 😍 It's a crazy feeling see My books came today! 😍 It's a crazy feeling seeing them in such a big pile, I have to pinch myself, it's my book! The PhD thesis that I wrote. I think this needs some time to truly sink in😄 ~ In a about three weeks my life as PhD will finally be over and I will be dr. Els Kuiper 🤓 ~ Many people thought I was crazy when I said I wanted to start a new bachelors degree in biology in 2008. In 2006, I had graduated from art school as an art teacher and had started teaching in high schools. But it just didn't feel right.. so I followed my heart and enrolled in university. ~ I said I wanted to try it for a year, but I never looked back. University felt like a warm bath and science fit me like a glove. Of course there were stressful times, especially last year during the peak of covid.. and there are the long days with experiments and the one-day weekends. But there's also the freedom of filling them how you think it's best. ~ Science is like solving puzzles for work, and what can beat that? The puzzles are hardly ever straightforward and always interesting. They require creativity and upside-down thinking, and I love that! ~ I must say, I had the best team around me to do it. People who stimulated and encouraged me, and I hope to find that in my new lab as well. If you're ever in the neighbourhood of New York, don't hesitate to drop by😊 even though I might need to finish an experiment before having dinner😉🤓 ~ ~ The drawing of Rosalind Franklin in my cover design was made by the Canadian tattoo artist Elisa Shigehiro and I think it looks amazing!❤
Eindelijk! M'n proefschrift is vlak voor het einde Eindelijk! M'n proefschrift is vlak voor het einde van 2021 goedgekeurd🎉 De voorlopige promotiedatum stond al een tijdje, maar nu kan ik eindelijk zeker zeggen dat ik 28 februari ga promoveren! ~ Net als voor veel mensen, was dit jaar echt een k*tjaar. Ik weet ook niet hoe ik het voor elkaar gekregen heb.. met heel wat tranen en frustratie, dat is zeker. Maar het is echt klaar! ~ Ik hoop dat de coronamaatregelen het toelaten dat iedereen bij mijn promotie mag zijn, want zoveel werk verdient een mooie ceremonie met familie en vrienden 🤞❤ ~ En alvast voor iedereen een heel gelukkig 2022! Tot snel😊 ~ ~ 🇬🇧 Finally! My PhD thesis has been approved before the end of 2021 🎉 I've already known the provisional date for a while, but now I can say for certain that I'll be defending my thesis on the 28th of February! ~ Just as for many people, also for me 2021 was a pretty shitty year. And I don't know how I finished it all.. with a lot of tears and frustration, that's for sure. But I really did it! ~ I hope the corona measures will allow that everyone who wants to be there, can be there at my defense, because all this work deserves a ceremony celebrated with friends and family 🤞❤ ~ And a very happy 2022 to everyone!
